HISTORY

Regent House is one of Newtownards’ best-known historic buildings. The original Regency mansion was built around 1820 for local brewer Peter Johnston and later became Regent House School in 1927, remaining a school until 1962.

Among its notable former pupils was Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Blair “Paddy” Mayne, the Newtownards-born rugby international and founding member of the SAS, whose remarkable wartime career has made him one of the town’s most celebrated sons.
