Additional Information
Was it the much married Zsa Zsa Gabor famously said: I wanna be alone? ....Who-so-ever couldn’t find a better spot than GOAT ISLAND!! ... one of Carbery’s Hundred Isles, lying to the west of Schull Harbour and Long Island Sound.
It is made up of two: Great and little Goat, connected by a narrow neck of land.
Great island is accessed from a ‘cuas’ on the eastern end of the island. We are told that a lone man lived on the island and for ease of access he cut steps into the rock face, today they are gone, being replaced by a level rock face onto which an inflatable could be hauled. His stone built one roomed dwelling which would have had a sound proof thatched roof now has a corrugated iron roof... with an interior that somewhat reminds of that occupied by Laurence of Arabia in remote Dorset county, England !
Little Goats claim to fame is that it is home to a Beacon on the southern side that told sailors in the days of sail that there was shelter to be had close at hand.
In the divide between the two islands, but not accessible from either, there is a secluded sandy beach and a flat fallen cliff rock.
Goat Island, its c.38 acres and 6 resident goats are now for sale: opportunity knocks!!
Viewings are strictly by appointment only.
