The Coastguard station was built in 1873 and was fully occupied by 1875. It consisted of six two-storey dwellings for ratings and a three-storey dwelling for the officer in charge, together with a boathouse, workshops and launching slipway. The coast guard was created in 1822 by the amalgamation, under the Board of Customs of the Customs Service and the Preventative Water guard. The function of the Water Guard was the prevention of smuggling and the provision of assistance to ships wrecked on the coast. In 1831, the administration of Coastguard was transferred to the Royal Navy and in 1850 it came under the direct control of Admiralty.
