RTU "supporting the talent of the future" at Belfast Telegraph Property Awards 2017
5th Oct 2017
The innovative RTU company is one of the largest suppliers of factory-produced mortar in Northern Ireland. It is hard to believe this established business began on a home farm in Parkgate in 1990 as a family run business.
Product development along with a fast-growing business saw the company create a strong foothold in the property sector.
This year, RTU are proud to be sponsors of the Young Architect of the Year Award at the 2017 Belfast Telegraph Property Awards.
David McIlroy, Director of RTU, believes in offering support to the industries that have supported his company throughout the years.
"To have the opportunity to sponsor Young Architect of the Year means we are supporting the talent of the future and we are delighted to recognise one of the individuals who will undoubtedly help shape the architecture of Belfast and Northern Ireland for many years to come," he said.
The company developed at a fast pace throughout the early days due to introducing factory-produced mortar to the market in 1992. This was the first product of its kind in Northern Ireland and is known as “tubbed mortar.”
By 1998, RTU had outgrown their initial base in the family farm and shifted to a new production plant in Newtownabbey, leaving them with great links to their Greater Belfast market.
With the 2007 recession came a number of tough years within the construction industry. However, RTU continued to persevere, introducing various products to the construction market.
In 2008, the company launched Ultraflo, another first for Northern Ireland. Ultraflo is a calcium sulphate liquid floor screed and this innovate product was followed by another. In 2013, the company introduced Exposa decorative concrete, another first of its kind for Northern Ireland.
Exposa was awarded an Environmental Improvement Award by the Concrete Society after it was used in the Portstewart promenade in 2007.
RTU works with many leading construction companies including Henry Brothers, Tracey Bros, McAleer & Rushe and O’Hare McGovern, supplying to many large-scale building projects including University of Ulster, The Mac building, Queen’s University Belfast and Portstewart promenade.
RTU is one of the leading three suppliers of concrete to the construction sector in Northern Ireland. Recent projects have included the Lidl Store in Andersonstown, Henderson’s Warehouse in Mallusk and Duncrue’s new Translink Warehouse.
