A Northern Ireland mansion is now on the market
18th Sep 2017
A "country paradise" enclosed by over 100 acres of farmland in the heart of Northern Ireland has been put on the market.
This expansive house, known as Dartan Hall, is located on the outskirts of Killylea village in Armagh. It was built between 1850 and 1860 by the Cross family, a family of 17th century settlers from Lancashire, England. It is now on the market after the current owner decided to downsize.
This five-bedroom residence – defined as “something of a mongrel” between the Georgian and Victorian period – is on sale at £1.75m.
While it may be a dream for many people, there is plenty of opportunity for the upmarket entrepreneur.
The property features a farmyard equipped with a slated cattle house, with the capacity to house 250 beef cattle, and bull pens.
Along with this farmyard, the ground also holds a superb Victorian-style courtyard featuring the original coach house, and the gatekeeper’s lodge is also on sale.
Dartan Hall remained inhabited by the Cross family from construction until 1906. It was then let to JS Hamilton, a son of the Dean of Armagh.
The property was then inhabited by the Knox family and it lay unoccupied for many years.
Current owner John Erskine acquired the residence in 1987, and since then it has been extensively restored.
The Kennedies Road property comprises of two storeys and a basement, and offers "unbound potential" on around 117 acres of land.
The property radiates 19th century charm with slate tile hearth and fireplace in the living room.
The hall on the first floor has been renovated for contemporary living and the master bedroom is complete with a walk-in wardrobe and en suite.
The current owner, who has farmed successfully on the land for almost 30 years, has put Dartan Hall on the market, because he wants to "scale down".
The current owner has farmed on the land for almost three decades and has placed this mansion on the market in order to “scale down”
"It is one of the most peaceful places on earth. It really is a country paradise," said Mr Erskine.
"As my late father said, 'The more you live here, the more you like it'.
"The house sits off the road, so there is no noise, but you can still see life.
"The house looks over the village of Killylea, and it is only 40 minutes from Belfast. Now it needs someone else who can look after it and give it some TLC."
Best Property Services in Newry is the selling agent for Dartan Hall. A spokesperson for the agent said “We have had a lot of interest, as 100-acre plus farms of this quality are a scare commodity.
"We are confident that we will have sufficient bidders to achieve market value close enough to our guide price. The owner is downsizing as he currently lives alone in the residence which is too large for him."
