The name Rathmullan derives from the Irish name R?th Maol?in which means ?The Ringfort of Maol?in`. It is situated on the western shores of Lough Swilly 11 km from Ramelton and 12 km from Milford and serves as an important historical village as it was the scene of The Flight of the Earls in 1607 ? a major turning point in Irish history.
