Description

Superb gentleman's residence situated on approximately 10 acres of gardens, woodlands and paddocks on the outskirts of the market town of Ballymahon centrally located between Athlone, Longford, Mullingar and approximately one and a half hours drive from Dublin.  Also only five minutes drive from the shores of Lough Ree and close by Glasson Village with its wonderful Golf Course, Pubs and Restaurants.

Built originally in the mid eighteenth centaury by the Very Rev Cutts Harman, Dean of Waterford as a hunting lodge for Newcastle House close by.  Its inspiration came from Stupingi, the hunting palace of the dukes of Savoy near Turin and its main feature consists of a central octagonal ballroom with four two storey wings projecting from four of its faces.  This stunning octagonal ballroom is a single lofty vaulted chamber with a central chimney pillar, the base of which is adorned with marbled Corinthian columns and its four corners an entablature and segmental pediments on console brackets, with a fireplace in each of its four facades.  The beautiful Italian Baroque effect is completed with a marble floor and stunning plasterwork on the walls ceilings and chimney pillar.

In the early nineteenth centaury in order to make the house more habitable and comfortable a large conventional two storey extension was built onto the front of the house, incorporating two of the above mentioned wings.  This part of the house has a top lit stairs.

During its history the property has been used as a hunting lodge, gentleman's residence, a convent and more recently a nursing home.  It has been maintained in excellent condition throughout with most of the original features such as plaster, staircases, fireplaces, doors, skirting and architraves all still intact and in excellent condition.

Access to the property is from the public road (Ballymahon ½ mile) by way of a secluded and wooded three hundred metre long avenue through an impressive and ornate cut stone gateway and the residence is centrally positioned in its parkland and surrounded by attractive mature trees including three hundred year old evergreen oak.

Castlecor House will make a fine residence for a discerning owner but will also lend itself to a myriad of other uses such as a corporate headquarters, a software development facility, education or administrative use or a country house hotel or restaurant.
