Description
LOCATION
Clonacody House is a beautiful Georgian residence standing on approximately 122 acres of mature parkland and arable farmland overlooking the Comeragh Mountains and the much fabled Slievenamon (the mountain of women).
A notable feature of the property is its substantial road frontage (approx. 1 mile) marked by a stone wall. To the south and east the land comprises well-maintained arable farmland interspersed by frequent copes of well-managed deciduous woodland. Immediately north of the house is an expanse of mature parkland surrounded by wooden fencing containing a number of specimen deciduous trees planted within three circles. A gravelled tree lined avenue extends from the gate house on the eastern boundary to the front of the house where it expands into a large elliptical parking area.
DESCRIPTION
Clonacody is situated in the heart of the horse racing community. If the purchaser was so inclined the property could be further developed as a horse training facility. There are eighteen loose boxes and an enclosure yard for conversion. The property also has an excellent one and a half mile grass gallop. (Winners of such great races as the Cheltenham Gold Cup, The Aintree Grand National and the Galway Plate trained at Clonacody.)
Given the property's beautiful setting and lands it may be further developed as an equestrian or leisure facility subject to planning permission.
The house was built in around 1782 and was initially occupied by the Kellet family who had a strong connection with the British Military. The great Antarctic explorer and cartographer Admiral Henry Kellet was born here. His explorations and expeditions span the 19th century. Some of the oak from a ship he commanded called the ‘Resolute' is now the ornate desk that sits in the Oval Office of the White House.
ACCOMMODATION
On the north side of the house, one enters through a beautiful Georgian doorway with Doric Style pilars on either side supporting a tympanum with a handsome keystone in the centre. There is an impressive hall from which an elegant spiral staircase can be seen to the left. To the right of the hall is a cosy and much lived in study. Just off the study is the family kitchen at the heart of which is an AGA cooker.
The Drawing room is on the south side. This is a wonderful room to get away from it all and enjoy the peace and quiet. The adjoining Dining Room is an elegant, well-proportioned room and enjoys views to the east and south. It is a perfect room for convivial dinner parties or family Sunday lunches.
The upper two floors have a total of eight bedrooms. On the first floor on the south side of the house are two spacious bedrooms joined by a dressing room that can also be used as another bedroom. There are two smaller bedrooms on the north of the house. At the end of the corridor dividing the floor are two bathrooms.
On the top floor there are four bedrooms, three south facing and one facing east. These rooms are peacefull and ideal for guests. There is also a bathroom and kitchenette.
The basement is a surprisingly bright area opening out to a rockery that was created by the current owners. Currently, this floor is used largely as an office and store area, however there is potential for conversion into an expanded family and recreational area.
The annex situated to the southwest of the main house is a charming two-storey residence that enjoys views of the gardens and mountains. The ground floor comprises a large sitting room/dining room with kitchen and WC. On the top floor there are three bedrooms and a bathroom.
The gate lodge is a comfortable single storey cottage that has been recently renovated. It comprises a living room, a wood floored kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom. A lawn and garden area surround the lodge.
There is a one bedroom flat that overlooks one of one of the stable yards.
One of the buildings in the stable yard is now under conversion into a substantial three-bedroom residence with full planning permission. This residence has its own private garden called “The Plantation" that has a number of mature trees.
