DESCRIPTION
Newtown House is beautifully positioned in the middle of its own land with enchanting south facing views over the River Abbert and countryside. The house, which is approached by a mature tree lined drive, has been respectively restored in recent years and now presents itself as a very comfortable and private family home. The accommodation is well arranged with well proportioned and bright rooms. There are many fantastic Georgian features throughout the house, including large sash windows with shutters, corniced ceilings, panelled door surrounds with architraves, reclaimed pitch pine wooden floors, marble and pine fireplaces with decorative carvings.
To the rear of the main residence is a large courtyard, which now houses four cottages and some useful workshops and outbuildings. The gardens are mainly laid out in lawns with magnificent specimen trees surrounding, including a very rare and large Ewe Tree (known as the “Kissing Tree"). To the rear of the garden is a separate apple orchard together with a pond, Greenhouse and polley tunnel.
Newtown Houses is a rare opportunity to buy an estate offering woodland country walks, trout fishing on the river, equestrian pursuits and a large yet manageable period home.
HISTORY
It is thought that Newtown House dates back to 1730 when it was built by the Browne Family. Although there was a dwelling listed at Newtown in 1685. Many well known characters have either owned or visited the property over the years, including Lord Clifden Wrottesely, whose father when in residence planted 500 beach trees on the drive in commemoration of his birth. Other owners have included Judge Kelly and in the 1930's Major Carr. Wrottesely hosted the wedding of the Duke of Warrick's daughter. It is thought that the architraves in the principle rooms were gifted to Newtown House at the time of this wedding.
