Dundonald lies at the foot of the Craigantlet hills in the suburbs of East Belfast. The town is steeped in history, the name Dundonald is an anglicised version of Dún Dónaill meaning Dónall's fort referring to a 12th century Norman fort, that stood in the centre of the town. The man-made hill that the fort stood on is still in existence and is one of the largest in Ireland. Although the mound is commonly referred to as 'the moat' this is, in fact, a corruption of the word 'motte' and refers to the fact that this defensive structure was built in the style of a motte and bailey.

Man has lived in this area for centuries, indeed, the Dingles Millreagh development is situated on the site of a Neolithic settlement (c4000-2000BC), which during the summer of 2006 was thoroughly investigated, studied and recorded by archaeologists before any houses were permitted to be constructed.

A 300 year old watermill is located on the Newtownards side of the town. The sandstone building has been extensively restored and includes a 35-foot waterwheel, the largest in Ireland.
